Carved Leather Box from Vogt®
Leather carving is a very exacting craft with a long rich history in Old Mexico and the American West. The heavy leaf and floral designs are believed to have been developed when Cortez brought Spanish saddle and harness makers with him to the New World. Some patterns date back through many generations of skilled craftsman -often passing from father to son. The Vogt family has worked with many of these families for nearly 40 years maintaining the heritage and tradition of high quality leather crafting.
The weight (thickness) of the leather determines the depth of the carved pattern – the heavier the weight, the deeper the pattern. This elegant box with the western "Orchid" pattern is made of a medium weight leather to achieve its rich finish, depth of carving, and still maintain a sleek finish. The design is actually cut into the leather and the background hammered down causing the piece to last much longer. Some carved leather pieces in museums are known to be more than 100 years old. Hard usage and years will not obliterate the rich carved designs.
After the box is assembled and the box and leather has dried, it is dyed and polished to a rich Saddle Brown color and a padded black cloth lining is added to the inside bottom of the box. Each piece is entirely handmade - one at a time. Heirloom quality you will be proud to hand down to your children or grandchildren.
Hinged lid box measures 10-7/8" x 8-7/8" x 3-5/8".
