When I was 14 years old my grandfather taught me to use a straight razor. He dulled the edge of one of the several he owned and before I had a beard he taught me every move I needed to know. When he felt I was ready he re-edged that razor and every Sunday morning for the next four months he supervised my shave. I used that razor until I was in OCS where the rush for the wash basins made it unsafe.
For several years it has been almost impossible to buy a new high-carbon steel straight razor. But earlier this year, Boker re-introduced their high-carbon razor and just to prove that they could, they created a high-carbon damascus razor as well. I have always laughed at damascus razors because of the problem with the welds that cross the edge making tiny edge serrations. Boker says that by increasing the layers to 300 they have solved that problem. The blade in both of these razors feature the much sought-after round end and are ground in Germany by Boker's grinding experts.
