This fully gimbaled, boxed compass is a faithful replica of a dory compass. A compass such as this was used by both the individual fisherman who would set out each day with fishing lines and just enough food for a day, and the commercial fishermen who carried them in their dory to find their way back to the sailing schooner from which they launched.
