Study on the use of the Japanese sword is a very serious endeavor. Students of Iaido (Way of the Sword Draw) typically learn the sword using various instruments. Most likely they will start using a bokken/bokuto (wooden sword) and then an iaito (un-edged training sword) before handling a shinken (live sword). Iaito are an integral tool in the learning process allowing students to practice with a sense of safety for themselves and those around them.

The blade in this fine iaito is constructed from cutlery grade stainless steel with an etched temper line (hamon) and a groove (bo-hi) the full length of the blade, which reduces the weight. It is extremely well balanced, allowing for repetitive drawing without wear and tear on the muscles and joints.

While these swords have not been sharpened, they should be handled with great care. Other than sharpening, they are ground exactly the same as they were during the era of the Samurai and can inflict damage.

Crane Tusba

The quality is remarkable and the fittings are superb. The handle (Tsuka) is covered in black ray skin and wrapped in a premium Japanese cotton Ito. The guard (Tsuba) features a traditional Crane motif, a theme repeated in the handle fittings (Fuchi/Kashira). The handle ornament (Menuki) and blade ferrule (Habaki) are plated in silver.

The scabbard is constructed in the traditional way, of wood with a deep black lacquer coating and a beautiful rayskin-covered section extending from the throat to the cord knob (Kurikata).

The blade length is 28" and the handle 10". Measures 39" overall. Sword only weighs 1lb. 14 oz.
