The Amur Tiger, also known as the Siberian Tiger, is a rare sub-species of the Tiger and is the largest natural animal in the feline family, males may weigh up to eight hundred pounds. It is critically endangered and is largely confined to the Amur-Ussuri region, a very small part of southern Russia, where it and the Amur Leopard are now being actively protected.
During the Safari Club International Convention held in Reno, January 2004, John Banovich and SCI hosted a special reception and presentation, Khunta Mi - Conserving the Amur which was an informative and educational conservation presentation alerting us to the threats facing the Siberian Tigers, the human aspect and the role hunters can play in the important next steps to ensure long-term survival.
The people in the areas of Amur population are now beginning to recognize that their economic well being is linked to the presence of the tigers and are developing activities that bring in tourists because of these tigers. "I hope that generations to come will have the opportunity to live in a world where the Amur tiger still roams free, and that in some way my work will help inspire us to protect our wildlife and ensure its survival. " John Banovich
