The game of Go, probably the oldest game still in existence, was played by the Chinese from the earliest antiquity. It has been played in its present form by the Japanese for over eleven centuries and has come to be regarded as their national game. The game has gained popularity in the rest of the world in recent years.

Go is noted for being rich in strategic complexity despite its simple rules. The game is played by two players alternately placing black and white stones on the vacant intersections of a 19" x 19" grid board. The object of the game is to control a larger part of the board than the opponent. To achieve this, players strive to place their stones in such a way that they cannot be captured, while mapping out territories the opponent cannot invade without being captured. Part of the strategic difficulty of the game stems from finding a balance between such conflicting interests.

The traditional board is solid wood, often in the form of a table and can be rather expensive. However, the game can be played using a simple grid on a piece of paper with plastic chips or coins for stones. This set includes a folding 16" board, simple melamine stones and an instruction book with an interactive CD-ROM. Perfect for either beginning or skilled players.
