This powerful raptor has a body length of 19 to 27 inches, a wingspan of 3 to 4 feet and weighs between 1 and 3 pounds. It's a widespread species that inhabits the temperate parts of the Northern Hemisphere. The goshawk prefers coniferous forests, but will also inhabit deciduous and mixed forests from sea level to subalpine regions. It mainly hunts small to medium mammals and birds. Goshawks often hunt at forest edges from a hidden perch or patrol flights. Prey is usually caught on the ground. Well known for its fierce defense of its nest, it commonly attacks people and other animals that approach too closely. Nests are reused for many years and the birds will return to the same wintering location year after year. Goshawks have been prized for many centuries as a falconry bird for their speedy pursuits and fearless demeanor.

The detailed wood carving of this impressive bird of prey, by Phil Galatas, has been hand-cast in a poly-stone resin, then hand painted in realistic detail. Each sculpture is mounted on a 6-1/2" diameter solid wood base with a metal identity plate. Measures 10-1/2" high from table top and weighs 3 lbs. 4 oz.
