~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Popeyed Birdstones from the Hopewell period were usually made of granitic or diorite porphyry. These birdstones are considered to be among the finest work done in stone by prehistoric craftsmen. It is not known if they were really meant to represent birds or perhaps some legendary creature. They have been called "birdstones" because that is what they seem to most closely resemble in our world. The intended purpose is also not known. Some think perhaps they were used simply for ornamentation. Others believe that they might have served as highly decorative spearthrower weights.
These recent reproductions were created by Charlie Gilbert and are signed and dated. Each is hand carved and unique. Like the originals, these birdstones are carved from granitic or diorite porphyry. The stone varies from nearly solid black to highly speckled. Sizes range from 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" x 3" to 1-5/8" x 1-5/8" x 4".
