If you have ever broken a nail trying to open a strong springed knife or a difficult soda-pop can, then you know how helpful the proper tool for such a purpose can be. As I get older, I find that my once stout nails are becoming more and more like my hair, thin and fragile. Slipjoint knives, unless perfectly engineered and perfectly made, have become very difficult for me to open without an assist. Square tanged knives are very difficult without the proper tool.
The term San Mai comes from Japan and simply means "three layers". The San Mai steels that began appearing in the American knife market the past few years have all come from Japan. Laminated steels, such as San Mai, were developed to allow a very hard center core for the best cutting and edge holding and a blade that is tough enough to not snap under normal pressure. The soft sides support the hard core and add strength.
Push Daggers appear to be a uniquely American development, first appearing on the early riverboats and in the gold fields of California and Nevada. Gamblers favored them because they could be as swift across a poker or faro table as a percussion pistol without the possibility of a mis-fire.

Landon Selby, the expert craftsman who has made our obsidian knives for years, uses the same materials and the same techniques to create all the models we offer.

The knife industry in Europe, as well as in Japan, has always centered around one area in each country. In England, it was Sheffield, in Germany, Solingen, in Japan, Seki City and in Italy it has been Maniago. In the recent past, we have seen a decline in quality knife production in England, Germany, the United States and most recently in Japan. There are good companies making quality knives remaining in Germany, Japan and the U. S., but they are few.
Over the years I have seen many sailors knives, including the one made for us in Japan.
