The most important Native American musical instrument is the drum. Different tribes have different traditions regarding the drum and how to play it, but the basic construction is very similar in most tribes. It is a wooden frame with finely tanned buckskin or elkskin stretched taut across the opening by sinew thongs. Traditionally, American Indian drums are large and are played by groups of men who stand around them in a circle. There are also some tribes in which each drummer has his own instrument. This hand drum, made by Yolanda Martinez is such a drum. Each is handcrafted of elk hide and hand painted by Yolanda. Measures 14" in diameter and 2-7/8" thick. Includes handcrafted drum beater and Yolanda's CD Desert Song.
