Much of the inspiration for Michael Sieve's paintings is just a short walk from his front door in southeastern Minnesota's bluff country, a region blessed with stunning scenery and abundant wildlife. From his work, it is obvious that he understands the farmer on whose land the wildlife thrive, the sportsman and the conservationist.

This herd of whitetail deer at the edge of a Minnesota corn field is actually the life story of one whitetail buck. Michael Sieve used trail camera photos, personal observations and finally the big buck's skull and rack to create this time-line as the buck grew from fawn to a magnificent 16 point mature buck.

"This is a painting of a real deer that lived near my house for five years. I spent many hours thinking about, planning and hunting this deer before he died late last fall. He is the largest buck, and possibly the oldest buck, I have seen near my home in Southeast Minnesota in 20 years, and is a good indicator of what the bucks in that area would look like if they could live as long as this buck did." - Michael Sieve
