During World War I, air combat was the stuff from which legends were made. Ace pilots were household names and the results of air duels between German and Allied air forces were printed daily in newspapers across the world. Perhaps the most famous fighting ace was Manfred von Richthofen, known to the English speaking world as the Red Baron. Before his death at the age of 25, in a time of fabric and wooden aircraft when twenty air victories insured a pilot legendry status, Baron von Richthofen had accumulated eighty. Many were accomplished in Fokker tri-planes which were painted red, the source of his nickname.
This model of the Baron's plane is made of silk fabric stretched across a lightweight frame, same as the original. Wire spoke wheels, leather cockpit accents, detailed engine and guns, laminated propellers and historically correct colors and markings. With a 32" wing span, it measures 26" in length, 13" high and weighs 3.85 lbs.
