It is rare for Non-Amish people to witness an Amish barn raising. They are usually spontaneous and are organized by word of mouth communication between friends and family. A traditional Amish barnraising is typically done in a day using the "old ways" with little change from the way it was done over 300 years ago.

This photo essay, by well-known knife photographer Jim Weyer, is a unique look into something that is becoming a thing of the past even in Amish Communities. Barns are being made of cement blocks and sheet metal. Beginning at 5:52 a.m. until the barn is completed at 4:02 p. m., each stage is shown in Black and White. Originally published in 1988. Out of print, we have the remainder. Hardcover. 122 pages. 11" x 8-3/4". Photos by Jim Weyer, text by Dick Roberts.
