First introduced to North America for hunting, the flashy ring-necked pheasant is one of the most widely distributed and popular game birds amongst sportsmen. It is commonly found over the northern United States and southern Canada in agricultural lands with crops of corn, wheat, oats, barley or hay, or areas with grasslands mixed with small woodlands. Males will measure thirty to thirty six inches long (this includes a long tail that may reach twenty one inches in length), with an average wingspan of thirty two inches. August and its hints of fall - ripening grain, and a change in the plumage of young roosters means that pheasant season is approaching.
This wall mounted male Ring-neck Pheasant began as a solid Tupelo Gum or Basswood carving by Master Carver Sam Nottleman. From the original, a mold is made to created the hand-cast reproductions. Each sculpture is hand finished and hand painted. Nearly life size, it measures 21" tail to beak and 18" high.
